Who we are
The WA Grandparents for Climate Action has its origins in the Extinction Rebellion Climate movement when a sub-group of like minded, mature individuals came together to work more closely on local climate protests. Created over 6 years ago, we have since evolved into an independent group, still with ties to XR but also working with other climate action focused groups in WA.
Our focus is on the gas industry, in particular Woodside and its North West Shelf development, and the WA government in its actions to support the ongoing development of gas in our state.
Our group consists mostly of retired individuals, with ages ranging from 60s to 80s, from a wide range of backgrounds. Amongst our numbers we have retired architects, psychologists, professors, social workers, builders and business professionals. Apart from our shared interest in addressing climate change, we have wide-ranging personal interests and hobbies. Many are also involved in other causes close to their hearts.
Our group shares common aims with a particular focus on doing what we can to provide a safe, healthy future for our grandchildren.
We value mutual respect and caring for each other, as well as the environment.
Our organisation is not hierarchical but could be described as collaborative. All ideas are welcome and input to discussions encouraged. We are self-funding, we have no paid staff or financial backers and do not ask for membership fees.
Our meetings are informal and held via Zoom or face to face, often following on from an action. Ideas are discussed and decisions on actions to be undertaken are generally arrived at through consensus.
